Biography

After graduating from high school, in 1877-1881 he studied law at the University of Budapest . In 1879, his father died, leaving his 18-year-old son to take care of the family. Ambrose began to work as a teacher, then as a theater critic, and published articles in the press ( Fovárosi Lapok , Pesti Napló and Budapesti Szemle ).

Literature attracted Zoltan Ambrush more than jurisprudence, so in 1885 he went to Paris, where he studied philology and the history of French literature at the College de France and the Sorbonne .

After returning to his homeland, he became one of the employees of the Hét magazine in Pest. He wrote a large number of stories.

In 1900 he edited the magazine Új Magyar Szemle . In 1917-1922 - Director of the National Theater.

Zoltan Ambrush is a representative of Hungarian romanticism and realism . A subtle essayist, one of the creators of the Hungarian “career novel” that had spread around the turn of the century, learned a lot from French “experimental” and psychological prose, Renan and France, a successor to the traditions of 19th-century French literature . He introduced a type of French psychological novel into Hungarian literature.

Sober analyticity helped Ambrose to get rid of sentimental national-national "fictions" (in his own words). But she has not yet brought the impulse "up": not idealizing, but affirmatively-ideal dreams.

The author of several dramatic works published in the journal Nyugat, novels, short stories, essays and short stories collected in sixteen volumes.

He translated a number of works by French authors, including Balzac , Flaubert , Maupassant , Anatole France , Victor Cherbullier and others.
