Story

In the First World War , during the Battle of the Somme , five French soldiers were brought to trial under the tribunal on charges of intentionally injuring themselves for fear of a morning attack. The Tribunal sentences all five to death, and they are thrown into a neutral strip between the two lines of the front, near the Bingo at dusk outpost. After that about all five is not known. In the sequence of the appearance of these soldiers on the screen and their brief “military biography”, the fifth soldier in order with his story appears - this is Manek, the groom of the main character of the film, charming Matilda, who does not believe that her lover died. Her heart tells her the opposite. After the end of the war, Matilda conducts her own investigation, gradually finding out what really happened that day from Bingo at dusk.

Interesting Facts

  • During the film, Manek knocks several times (on the bell, on the rock, and then on the tree in the neutral strip) the letters "MMM". These letters mean “ Manech aime Mathilde ”, “ Manek loves Matilda ” - in French, the word “ aime ” is pronounced the same as the letter “M” ([ e m ]). In the Russian translation, Manek says “ Manek is Matilda’s husband ”, “ Matilda is Manek’s dream ”, so that the sounds correspond to the Russian spelling of letters.
  • "Long engagement" - the second collaboration of Jean-Pierre Jeanne and Audrey Tautou after the famous " Amelie ". The film owes this fact to its unofficial tagline - “ Amelie goes to war ” . The official tagline of the film is Never Let Go .
