Bôa is a British alternative / indie rock band. It was formed in London in 1993 by drummer Ed Herten. To date, the group has the following composition: Jasmine Rogers (vocals), Steve Rogers (vocals / guitar), Alex Curd (bass) and Lee Sullivan (drums / piano). From time to time the sound of the group has passed from funk to rock. They released the two most significant albums, Twilight (2001) and Get There (2005). Perhaps their most famous song, Duvet, became the theme of the opening of the anime series Serial Experiments Lain . And as a result, they became widely known among anime lovers around the world. Initially, the band signed to Polystar (Japan) and released their first album, 'Race of a Thousand Camels' (1998), under this label . However, the group chose to change labels and signed with Pioneer LDC (now known as Geneon) for the release of their next album Twilight (2001).

Following the success of Twilight, the band decided to create their own independent label Boa Recordings to record Get There (2005). Their last, at the moment, album, [1] was released on February 1, 2005. In this album, Bôa took a new direction, with more elaborate lyrics and melodies, and at the same time, making the sound soft, even more suitable for the concept of indie rock . Also, on this album there are more acoustic elements than on the previous work of the group.

Group History

Bôa was originally a funk band formed in 1993 by drummer Ed Herten, keyboardist Paul Tarrell and guitarist / vocalist Steve Rogers.

Alex Curd, who played along with Ed (in the Draggin 'Bones group), was soon accepted into the group as a bass player. Steve’s younger sister, Jasmine Rogers, was invited to sing the chorus of one of the band’s first songs, entitled “Fran,” and she soon became a soloist. Ben Henderson, who played with Alex on Doctor Sky, was invited to play the saxophone.

Their first concert took place in January 1994 at the London Forum, with the support of Steve and Jasmine's father, British singer Paul Rogers (known for groups like Free and Bad Company ). [2] In the summer of that year, Ed Herten decided to leave the band to concentrate on his studies, and they invited a new drummer, Lee Sullivan (son of Terry Sullivan, drummer of the Renaissance band). Lee introduced a more rocky sound that complemented the sound of the band.

Bôa honed their live performances at many concerts throughout Southern England such as the Glastonbury Festival (1995). As a result of their performance at the Glastonbury Festival, they were selected as the main group for a documentary about the festival, which was subsequently shown on the Shift show in London. In 1996, they signed a contract with a Japanese company, Polystar. They recorded three songs: "Twilight", "Deeply", and "Elephant" in London, with producer Darren Allison (Spiritualized, The Divine Comedy) at Red Bus Studios. The rest of the songs for the album were recorded with producer Neil Walsh at Monnow Valley Studios. [3] Although the album was recorded and made in England, Jasmine and Steve went to Japan in 1998 to release their debut album, Race of a Thousand Camels , [4] which was released only in this country.

During this time, the band released their first single, titled "Duvet". [5] This single was very popular in Japan and became the theme of the opening of the anime series Serial Experiments Lain . The song "Duvet" was also on the Race of a Thousand Camels album. Meanwhile, the band worked with producer Stuart Epps on new material, including an acoustic version of Duvet and the song Drinking .

In 2000, Polystar released Tall Snake EP and Duvet on the 20th Aniversary Of Polystar Collection Vol. 1 Female Vocal Love Songs . The Tall Snake EP mini-album was released in Japan, including all three Duvet versions and two songs ( Little Miss and Two Steps ). However, in 2000, Ben Henderson left the band to focus on his project, Moth, along with his wife, singer Tina Henderson.

The band began touring more intensely and used this time to get inspiration for their next album. In 2000, Bôa played a concert at the Otakon [6] convention and was well received by fans of the Serial Experiments Lain . In September 2002, they performed at Hammersmith Apollo (London) and received good reviews for their performance. [7]

In 2001, due to disagreements with Polystar, the group changed their label and signed with Pioneer LDC (now known as Geneon Universal). Race of a Thousand Camels was renamed Twilight and released in the United States in 2001 by Pioneer Music. Twilight's album consisted of songs from the original Japanese album, and also included new tracks. They worked closely with Todd Culberhouse and toured the US in support of the album. In the middle of the tour, Paul Tarrell leaves the band. However, the group decided to end the tour and play at AnimeFest in Dallas, Texas (August 2001).

The song "Duvet" was remixed by DJ Wasei [8] , and in October 2003, it was added to another soundtrack for the anime Serial Experiment Lain called Serial Experiment Lain Soundtrack: Cyberia Mix . The participants also filmed a video for this song. It is known that the clip was shot on the roof of Lee's apartment.

By 2003, the band decided to create their own record label Boa Recordings. They started recording their third, successful album, called Get There, and released it on their own label in 2005 [9] . The album is currently available for purchase on the iTunes Store [10] . Also, Twilight and Get There albums can be found on the website of their official CD Baby distributor.

In September 2004, Steve and Jasmine performed the song "Drinking" with their father, Paul Rogers, at The Pack Strat. Also involved in this concert: Joe Walsh , Gary Moore , Brian May , David Gilmore and many others. This event was dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Fender Stratocaster. The film was released in 2005.

In 2012, participants created a page on the JustGiving website [11] and announced that they were starting to raise money for AAR JAPAN, a charity that seeks to correct the devastating effects of the 2011 tsunami.
