From the Choirgirl Hotel

From the Choirgirl Hotel - the fourth solo studio album of the American singer Tori Amos , released in 1998 . Unlike her previous albums, From the Choirgirl Hotel is a project that involved a whole rock band (instead of the usual Amos keyboard sound). After its release in May 1998, the album debuted in the US in fifth position and in the UK in sixth. Backed by the success of previous albums, From the Choigirl Hotel is Amos' strongest debut in the early days of the sale. In the United States, 153,000 copies were sold in the first week [1] . Amos was also nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1999.

The single "Spark" became a hit after its release in June 1998 (while this is the last single caught in the UK Top 40, it also reached the 49th position in the US Chart single), then Jackie's Strength (September 1998) and Cruel / Raspberry Swirl (November 1998).

Amos went on a tour of Plugged '98 Tour in support of the album with a group of musicians (a member of the album recording, Matt Chamberlain, on drums, John Evans on bass, and Tory’s long-time ally, Steve Cato, on guitar).

From the Choirgirl Hotel began recording on September 8, 1997 at the studio owned by Mark Hawley, Tori’s husband, the mastering was completed by early February 1998. Following the trends set in 1996 by Boys for Pele , Amos remixed some of the songs: in this way, “Jackie's Strength” and “Raspberry Swirl” became club hits. The theme of the album is very closely connected with the personal tragedy of the singer - she had two miscarriages in 1996 and 1998 [2] .

Thematically and conceptually, the title is a reference to a fictional, imaginary space where songs live their lives. Amos said that each song on the new album reflects the moments of life through which it passed: “So, Cruel appeared in a fit of anger. "She's Your Cocaine" and "Iieee" were born when I was a model of sacrifice. But in other songs it is shown that I managed to find a new meaning and a new value of life - like this, through loss ” [3] .

The album cover was created by a British photographer, Katerina Jebb. The image shows photocopies of Amos (in various poses) scanned on a person-sized photocopier [4] .

B-sides

This album, like most Amos albums, is also known for its collection of original b-sides. Amos recorded many songs that were not included in the album, but were released on singles or performed live at concerts. The songs "Cooling", "Never Seen Blue" and "Beulah Land" were originally written and recorded in 1996 for the album Boys for Pele . In 2010, several tracks from the album demo disc were uploaded to the Internet , including the new track “Violet's Eyes” [13] . Part of this song was included in Almost Rosey and Miracle for the album American Doll Posse (2007).
