Biography
About his parents and early childhood, nothing is known. There is only an assumption that he was the son of Gavrila Grigorievich Volkov, the younger brother of the famous 18th century artist Fedor Grigorievich Volkov . [3]
He studied at the Academic Gymnasium , consisting in it on the "state content", and graduated from it with the title of translator in 1797 . Then in 1797 he was seconded to the academic professor Tobiy Lovitsu to improve his knowledge in the field of chemistry. In 1803, he wrote a thesis “The Chemical Testing of Coal, Located in the City of Borovichi, Novgorod Province”, receiving the title of “Adjunct Chemical Sciences” (Petersburg, Academy of Sciences). Together with academician V. M. Severgin, he participated in scientific expeditions in Belarus, Poland and Finland. From 1804 to 1808 published a number of articles on chemistry. Investigated mineral coals of the Borovichsky field. Got the products of their dry distillation. Determined the proportion of coal and mineral impurities. In the ash composition he found oxides of silicon, aluminum, iron, traces of manganese, etc. (a publication in Technological Journal , vol. 1, part 1, 1804 , p. 93). Volkov also investigated the natural brine from the Mshagi station of the Novgorod province and found sodium chloride, magnesium salts, calcium chloride, calcium carbonate, etc. in it (ibid, vol. 5, part 4, 1808 , pp. 153-154) .
In 1809 he retired.
Literary Activity
He was among the organizers, secretaries and censors of the Free Society of Lovers of Literature, Sciences and Arts . Few of his poems, written in the anacreontic spirit , were printed in the Roll of Muses. From 1804, he stopped attending meetings of the Society, and in 1807 was officially excluded from it.
