Shaftesbury Avenue was laid between 1877 and 1886. She walked through the crowded St. Giles and Soho districts of the time in order to improve transport links with the West End . The street was named after politician and social reformer Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury , who was trying to improve the situation in slums .

Shaftesbury Avenue is now London's main theater street. It houses theaters such as Lyric , "Apollo" , Gilgud Theater , Queen's Theater , Palace Theater and the Shaftesbury Theater .

London Chinatown also begins on Shaftsbury Avenue, which accounts for more Chinese shops and restaurants on the street.
