Murat's family hails from Turkey, Murat himself was born in Antwerp . His sister Nurai died at the age of 4 due to a brain tumor , his brother Ercan died in 2004 as a result of a traffic accident . After finishing school, Murat studied at a technical university and intended to become an electrician. After some time, he found work as a doorman at a nightclub in Antwerp.

As European and World Champion in kickboxing and Muay Thai , he made his K-1 debut against Fikri Tijarti at the 2006 K-1 World Grand Prix tournament in Amsterdam in May 2006, winning a TKO in round 3. In February of the following year, he faced K-1 World MAX 2002 champion Albert Kraus at the K-1 World MAX 2007 in Tokyo, Japan and shocked the whole world by knocking out Kraus in the first round. After defeating Kraus in 2007, Directi spent two more fights in K-1, defeating Joerie Mes and Satoru Vaschicoba. Murat took part in the K-1 World MAX 2008 World Championship Tournament Final 16 in April 2008, but lost to Yoshihiro Sato by decision.

On February 8, 2009, he became the Showtime 70MAX champion, defeating Gago Drago by technical knockout. He held his first title defense against Moroccan fighter Chahid Oulad El Hadj at Showtime 2009 Lommel in October 2009. In December 2010, at It's Showtime 2010 Athens, in a fight against Chris Ngimbi, Murat lost the decision of the judges, thereby transferring his belt to a fighter from Congo. Directie was defeated by Robin van Roosmalen at Showtime in 2012 at Leeuwarden on January 28, 2012. After the fight, he announced the end of his career.
