- The effect of hydrogen fluoride on iron or iron (II) chloride :
- Reduction of iron (III) fluoride with iron or hydrogen :
Physical Properties
Iron (II) fluoride forms white crystals of tetragonal syngony , space group P 4 2 / mnm , cell parameters a = 0.483 nm, c = 0.336 nm, Z = 2.
Forms crystalline hydrates of the composition FeF 2 • n H 2 O, where n = 4, 8.
Chemical Properties
- It is restored to iron by hydrogen when heated:
- Reacts with hydrogen sulfide :
- It forms complex salts with alkali metal fluorides : K [FeF 3 ], NH 4 [FeF 3 ] • 2H 2 O.
Toxicity
Iron fluoride is a strong oxidizing agent, therefore it is considered an extremely toxic substance (hazard class: 1). He is a strong irritant. Causes severe skin burns and eye damage. Emits hazardous decomposition products generated in fire conditions.
