“ Animal Nitrate ” is a Suede song released on the third single from Suede 's debut album on February 22, 1993 . Reached seventh place in the UK singles chart , thus becoming the most successful single from the album [1] .

The name of the song is a reference to the narcotic substance amyl nitrite , which is used to increase sexual pleasure. According to BBC columnist Chris Jones, "despite its ambiguous title, this slightly defiant and cynical song successfully summed up what it was like to be young and chemically addicted in London at the time" [2] .
According to one version, the song was written about Justin Frischmann , who left Brett Anderson and began to meet with Damon Albarn , who later did not hide his addiction to drugs .
Even before the release of the single, Suede performed "Animal Nitrate" at the 1993 BRIT Awards [3] .
According to the official biography of Suede Love and Poison , the guitar refrain of the song was influenced by the musical introduction to the series on BBC Dixon of Dock Green . “Animal Nitrate” was not originally planned to be released separately: Brett Anderson was about to make the song “Sleeping Pills” the third single, but was convinced by Nude Records owner Sol Halpern .
The video for the song was directed by Pedro Romagna. He was banned from showing because of the image of kissing men, but won the first 1993 MTV Euro Video Song contest [4] .
In March 2005, Q placed Animal Nitrate on the list of 100 Greatest Guitar Songs at number 97 [5] .
In May 2007, NME magazine placed Animal Nitrate on the list of the 50 Greatest Indie Hymns at number 43 [6] .
