After the operation "The Tempest" in August 1995, there remained the only part of the Republika Srpska Krajina that did not come under Croatian control in the east - on the border with Serbia.
The UNTAES mission was created after the signing of the Erdut Agreement between the Croatian government and Serb representatives. The mission began on January 15, 1996 and was to last one year, during which its representatives were to monitor the demilitarization of these areas and ensure the peaceful reintegration of the territory into Croatia. The military and civilian mission consisted of just over 4,800 soldiers, more than 400 police officers and 99 military observers.
A year later, the mandate was extended for another year and completed on January 15, 1998 . A support team of 180 UN civilian police officers continues to monitor the actions of the Croatian police and monitor the return of refugees.
