Beetles of medium size (5-10.5 mm), with an oblong body from brown to red-brown in color with spots and bandages of yellow and often whitish scales. The rostrum is of medium length, slightly curved, cylindrical. Antenna attached at the middle of the rostrum or slightly in front of it. Pronotum transverse with sides rounded in front. Elytra oblong, parallel-lateral. Hips without teeth. Apex of tibia outside with tooth. Larva yellowish-white, can reach a length of 16 mm. Larvae develop under the bark of conifers and in cones. Beetles harm with additional nutrition in the crowns of trees. When larvae pit passages under the bark, a surface “wormhole” is formed, which penetrates the wood to a depth more often than 3 mm. Pupation is often in sapwood .
