Biography
Jewess. Born in the family of a wealthy Melitopol merchant. Received home education.
In 1871 she went to Zurich ( Switzerland ) to study at the medical faculty of the University of Zurich , then moved to study at the University of Bern .
Being abroad, she became close friends with political emigrants and radical students, entered the circle of “fritschs” [1] , worked in the typesetting Narodnik magazine “Forward” .
In 1874 she returned to Russia. At the end of 1874 she entered the Nosov weaving factory in Moscow with a passport of Maria Petrovna Krasnova, and led anti-government propaganda among the workers.
In February 1875, she participated in the drafting of the charter of the All-Russian Social-Revolutionary Organization.
Arrested on April 4, 1875 in Moscow and brought to inquiry in the case of anti-government propaganda ( trial of 50 ).
While imprisoned, she fell ill with a mental disorder in 1876 and was transferred to the hospital of the Moscow Prison Castle for examination and establishing sanity, and then was given on bail by her father. There were persistent rumors among the organization’s comrades that his father paid 5000 rubles for the release of Berta.
According to the Highest Commandment on November 11, 1876, the case was dismissed due to insanity due to mental health.
Having recovered, she went to Petersburg , where she studied shoe-making skills. Wanting to enter the factory, she moved to Kharkov . Before receiving a job, she lived with her father in Melitopol.
In 1878 she committed suicide [2] due to the fact that she could not share the fate of her comrades in the trial.
