Biography

Karamarko was born in the city of Zadar , in Croatia (at that time the Socialist Republic of Croatia as part of the Republic of Yugoslavia ). He graduated from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb in 1989, where he studied history. [one]

In 1992, he became the head of the Office of the Prime Minister, Josip Manolic , and then led the office of the Prime Minister Franjo Gregorich . From 1992 to 1993, he headed the Administration of the then Chairman of the Croatian Parliament, Stipe Mesic .

From 1993 to 1996, Karamarko served as the head of the Zagreb police, and from 1996 to 1998 he worked as an assistant to the Minister of the Interior .

In 2000, he headed the election headquarters of Croatian presidential candidate Stipe Mesic, and after the victory of the latter, he became the president’s national security adviser. He also served as chairman of the National Security Service from 2000 to 2002 [2] , head of the counterintelligence service from 2004 to 2006 [3] and head of the Security and Intelligence Agency from 2006 to 2008 [4] . In September 2011, he rejoins the CDU. At the XV CDU Congress on May 20, 2012, in the second round, Karamarko defeats Milan Kuyundzhich and becomes the 4th Chairman of the CDU.

He speaks English and Russian.

Divorced, father of two children.
