Charles Lacy Veach is a NASA astronaut , US Air Force Colonel. He made two space flights - on the shuttles : Discovery and Columbia , as a flight specialist.

Vich was born in 1944 in the city of Chicago , Illinois , but considers his city to be Honolulu , Hawaii , where he graduated from high school in 1962. In 1966 he graduated from the Air Force Academy of the United States Air Force and received a bachelor 's degree (design management) [1] .

Military career

Since 1966 he served in the US Air Force. He underwent flight training at the Moody Air Force Base in Georgia and in 1967 received the “wings” of an Air Force pilot. He completed training courses for fighter pilots at Lac Air Force Base in Arizona . From 1968 to 1981, for more than 14 years he served as a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, flew F-100 Super Saber , F-111 , and Republic F-105 Thunderchief aircraft at bases in the USA , Europe and the Far East . He participated in the Vietnam War and completed 275 sorties. In the years 1976-1977 he served in the squadron of aerobatics (acrobatic squadron) of the US Air Force - " Petrels " on T-38 aircraft . He resigned from the US Air Force in 1981, but continued to serve as a fighter pilot for the Texas National Guard Air Force [2] .

The total flight time on various types of aircraft is more than 5,000 hours.

Professional Activities

Since January 1982, he worked at the Johnson Space Center in Hewson, Texas, as an engineer and research pilot. He was a pilot instructor of the shuttle simulator aircraft, a modification of the Gulf Stream II aircraft, used to train shuttle pilots.

Space Training

In May 1984, he was enrolled in the NASA astronaut squad as part of the 10th set as a flight specialist. He took an OKP course since July 1984. Upon completion in June 1985, he received the qualification of a flight specialist and was appointed to the NASA Astronaut Department. Since 1992, he worked on a program for using robotic devices on board an orbital station.

Spaceflight

  • The first flight is STS-39 [3] , the Shuttle Discovery . It launched into space on April 28, 1991 as a flight specialist, landing on May 6. The flight duration was 8 days 7 hours 23 minutes [4] .
  • The second flight is STS-52 [5] , the shuttle Columbia . It launched into space on October 22, 1992 as a flight specialist, landing on November 1. The flight duration was 9 days 20 hours 57 minutes [6] .

Spent in space - 18 days 4 hours 20 minutes 24 seconds.

Memory

He died in Houston on October 3, 1995 from brain cancer. Buried at Punchbowl Memorial Cemetery, Honolulu City, Hawaii .

Rewards

He has received awards - the Air Cross "For Outstanding Merit", the medal "For Air Operations", the Air Force medal "For Merit", and the medal "Purple Heart". Also awarded two NASA medals “For Space Flight” .

Family

He was married to Alice Meig Scott, they have two children. He was fond of surfing, cycling, reading. He loved spending time with his family.
