Biography
The son of a Suffolk priest and a graduate of Cambridge , Nash came to London in 1588, where he became close friends with other "university minds" - Robert Green and Christopher Marlowe . In tandem with the latter he worked on the tragedy of Dido . Nash's life went on in extreme poverty, although it is known that he was patronized by Lord George Carey , a relative of Queen Elizabeth .
In 1592, Pierce Penilesse His Supplication to the Divell , a satirical text in the Rabelais tradition, replete with colloquial words and complex neologisms, came out from Nash's pen. Satire is directed against Green's literary foes - Gabriel Harvey and his brothers. The witty skirmish between Nash and Harvey continued from book to book until 1599, when the Archbishop of Canterbury forbade the publication of both.
Nash's most significant contribution to the collection of English literature is England's first rogue novel, The Unfortunate Traveler, or The Life of Jack Wilton (1594). Its action falls into individual episodes, which are inspired by real events of the beginning of the XVI century. In the book, along with fictional real persons, Martin Luther , Erasmus of Rotterdam , Thomas More are also displayed.
The production of the satirical play The Isle of Dogs (1597), composed by Nash in collaboration with Ben Johnson , shocked the London theater world. The content of this play is not reliably known, but it caused such a rage of the queen that Johnson was imprisoned, and Nash barely managed to escape from the capital to the county of Norfolk . Information about his future fate was practically not preserved.
