Course of the competition

The champion of Europe in 1990 and the world of 1991 at distances of 100 and 200 meters was German Catherine Krabbe. After the unification of the GDR and the FRG in 1990, the German sports authorities became concerned about the doping problem in the former GDR. To avoid the doping test, Crabbe and some of her teammates were preparing for the South Africa Olympics. When Germany sent a doping control team to South Africa, the test yielded negative results, but it was later announced that all urine tests were false (belonged to one person). All athletes who passed false tests were disqualified, then after the appeal the IAAF canceled the disqualification, but Catherine Krabbe, who experienced significant psychological stress due to these events, was not able to participate in the Olympic Games. In July 1992, a reanalysis tested positive for clenbuterol . After that, Krabbe no longer appeared on the treadmill.

In conditions where the leader did not participate in the competition, there were no obvious favorites. The silver medalist of the 1991 World Cup was Gwen Torrens, the leader of the 1992 world season was Merlin Otti from Jamaica. However, the American gold Gail Divers won the Olympic gold in an equal fight, where only 0.02 seconds shared the first and third places. Divers won only the hundredth from Juliet Cuthbert from Jamaica, and she won the hundredth from Irina Privalova. Torrance and Otti followed at intervals of 0.02 seconds. Shortly after the finish line, Torrance accused the winners of violating anti-doping rules, saying that “two of the three medalists took doping,” without specifying who. A few days later, winning gold at a distance of 200 meters, she dropped these charges.
