History

Universidad de Guadalajara Football Club was founded on August 19, 1970. The team began their first journey in 1970 in Tercera , in which they played for two seasons, after which they received the right to be promoted to Segunda . For the first time in its history, the club entered the Primera League in the 1973/1974 season, where they replaced Torreon .

During the first seasons in the top division, they had several qualified Brazilian football players , some of them black . Among Latinos at that time it was fashionable to wear hairstyles in the style of " Afro ". These hairstyles resembled the manes of lions , so just for “U. de G. "and entrenched the nickname " Leones Negros " ( Russian. Black Lions )

Over the course of seventeen seasons, the team with varying success, but quite steadily, played in the Premier League of the Mexican football championship. During this time, the club three times became the finalist of the Examples, won the CONCACAF Champions Cup and won the Mexico Cup.

The crisis in "W. de G. "

After 21 years of its existence, the team was in decline due to allegedly "dubious financial transactions." The club had very weak players, not a large detachment of fans, and they soon switched to the side of more popular local teams, such as the Guadalajara club, better known as Chivas, and the less popular Atlas club. From the 1991/1992 season to the 1993/1994 season "U. de G. ”did not rise above last place, and, in the end, this led to the Universidad de Guadalajara Club being removed from the competition by the Mexican Football Federation in order to reduce the number of teams in the league. Lions played their last match on May 27, 1994 in a derby against the Atlas club. In that match, they were defeated with a minimum score of 2: 1.

New Era

After relegating from the Top Division, the Mexican Football Federation returned the club to the third division, where in the 1996/1997 season he celebrated his championship, thereby gaining promotion to the Primera Division A league (second level), in which the Black Lions played before moment, until again flew into the minor league.

The team played in the Segund (third level), the Norte region, and for several seasons was one step away from moving into the second most powerful league in the camps. The club was inferior in the final matches to the club “ Academicos ” and then to “ La Piedad ”.

Return to Example

Businessman Jorge Vergara tried to return FC Universidad de Guadalajara to the Second League of Mexico. This was achieved by purchasing the Tapatio team's Division A franchise for $ 800,000 from the Leones Negros club.

On May 21, 2009, it was confirmed that the Universidad de Guadalajara club was included in Example A instead of Tapatio, which in turn ceased to exist.

Assenso MX Downgrade

At the end of the 2014/15 season, the club was demoted to Assenso MX .

Stadium

Jalisco Stadium.

The team’s home stadium is Mexico’s third largest football stadium, Jalisco . At the moment, its capacity is 63,163 people. However, from time to time, the club had to host guests at its former home stadium, the Municipal Santa Rosa, which can accommodate up to 4,000 spectators. This is due to the fact that the Halisco stadium is also considered the home arena of the club from Examples , another club from Guadalajara - Atlas . If the home meetings of these teams fell on one day, then the right to play the match was granted to the team from the High Division.

Symbols

Symbol and Talisman

The mascot "UdeG" is a lion cub. Until 2009, when the official emblem of the team was the emblem of the University of Guadalajara, the club’s logo was the club’s symbol. Then, after the team moves to the second Mexican division, the university’s coat of arms continues to adorn the team’s uniform, but as a symbol.
