Story

Painkiller: Recurring Evil continues the expansion of Painkiller: Resurrection . The protagonist Bill Sherman becomes the master of Purgatory, endowed with the power of the Seraphim Sword. However, the fallen angel Samael (who lost his wings after the battle with Belial in Painkiller: Overdose ), who became the new ruler of Hell instead of Eve, steals Bill's sword and sends him to uncharted places of Purgatory, rekindling a bloody struggle. At the end of his journey, Bill overtakes Samael, but the game ends without a final fight, as Bill is defeated at the hands of a fallen angel. However, depending on the complexity of the game, the ending may change: either Samael kills Bill or Belial saves him.

Gameplay

Game mechanics has remained unchanged and traditional for this series. The player fights against numerous enemies and defeats them, moving from one location of Purgatory to another. All weapons have an alternative fire mode. The player’s arsenal has remained the same - a bazooka, a shotgun, a gun and a few other types of weapons. There are no new monsters, all enemies have moved from previous games in the series. The game has only 5 levels.

Graphics

The graphics in the game are not much different from the previous parts, the reason is a fairly old game engine. The developers modified it a bit, balanced and improved some elements, but by modern standards, the graphics are noticeably behind.

Reviews and criticism

Gameplay (Angkor Level)

The game received rather low and mixed ratings from the gaming press. So, the add-on rating on the Metacritic website is only 38 points out of 100 [1] . The main complaints about the game were boring and primitive gameplay, in contrast to the original, the first part. The Russian gaming site AG.ru noted the extremely stupid artificial intelligence of opponents who “froze with stone statues, having lost sight of Bill for ten seconds, cannot go around a wooden box and climb onto each other’s heads, trying to crawl into a narrow doorway” [2] . The Italian website Multiplayer.it simply noted that the new Painkiller is just “something like an arena survival, with five levels, thousands of lagging monsters, which you have to kill from the same old weapons, with the same old graphics” [3] .
