He graduated from the Moscow Historical and Archival Institute , in 1983 he defended his dissertation “Chronicle and journalistic sources on the political history of Russia at the end of the 17th century”, in 1994 - the doctoral dissertation “Russian historians of the last quarter of the 17th century: from chronicles to research”.

Leading researcher at the Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences , head of the section "Education, Science and Art" of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences "Man in Everyday Life".

Full member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences , member of the Union of Journalists of Moscow , member of the organizing committee of the interdisciplinary scientific seminar on the history of cultural perception of Russia and the World .

The author of 40 published books, including monographs , textbooks, historical journalism, art and children.
