Tel Cabri ( Hebrew תל כברי ) is an archaeological site in Israel on the territory of Kibbutz Cabri near the city of Nahariya .

A characteristic feature of Tel Cabri is the presence of frescoes in the Minoan style, which is unique to Israel (the second largest location of Minoan art outside Crete is Avaris in Egypt ) [1] .

The territory of Cabri was first inhabited about 16 thousand years ago in the epipaleolithic era. Permanent structures appeared in the pre-ceramic Neolithic era around 10,000 BC. e. [2]

In the later layers of the tell , the ruins of the Canaanite (Phoenician) city of the Middle Bronze Age (2000-1550 BC) were discovered. It was the most important of the cities of that period in the Western Galilee . In the center of the city was a palace. Tel Cabri is the only fully excavated Phoenician city due to the fact that no new cities were built on top of its ruins [1] .

The 1.5-acre palace is also the only fully excavated Phoenician palace of the time. The city provides a complete picture of the political and social life of the Canaanite period; in particular, it can be used to judge whether there is a central administration, tax collection and type of agriculture [1] .

Excavations in Tel Cabri began in 1986 under the direction of Aaron Kempinski, but were interrupted in 1993. Since 2005, they have resumed under the joint leadership of Asaf Yasur-Landau from the Leon Recanati Institute of Marine Research at the University of Haifa and Eric Klein from the University. George Washington [1] [3] . In the summer of 2009, Aegean murals were found here.
