The 1937 season was the debut for Metallurg in Group D, the fifth-ranking division of the USSR Championship. Performance in the USSR championship in 1937 was the only one in history for the team of the factory "Red October" . The following year, the team was not allowed to compete in the USSR football section , which reduced the number of participants from 50 clubs to 26.

The Stalingrad Metallurg hosted opponents on the unpaved, almost grass-free pitch of the Metallurg stadium. The team performed in orange-blue t-shirts and white shorts, the second set of uniform was completely white.
