Story
In 1868, in the mountains, Gideon (Pierce Brosnan) fries a hare at the stake. Suddenly shots rang out. He grabs what he manages to take, and rushes down the mountain. His pursuers come out of hiding and check out his shelter. Colonel Morsman Carver (Liam Neeson), a former Confederate officer, hired bounty hunters to persecute Gideon: Papa ( Robert Becker ), Hayes (Michael Wincott), Parsons (Ed Loter) and Toddler (John Robinson).
Removing the bullet from his hand, Gideon burns the wound with a hunting knife. He tries to steal a horse, but he is caught at the crime scene by a young woman named Charlotte (Shannon Zeller), who first points a gun at him, and then, seeing that he is injured, helps him. She bandages his wound, and her family allows Gideon to spend the night in their house. He later buys a horse from them.
The hunters almost overtook Gideon, but he sets up an ambush using a bear trap that pierces the Kid. After some time, the pursuers are becoming less by one more: Parsons.
Gideon reaches the railroad builders' settlement, where he stops to steal food. He is detained by the local sheriff. Carver with the remaining hunter, Hayes, also arrives at the settlement. Meanwhile, Gideon escapes from custody. Carver and Hayes are chasing him. Gideon's horse fell and he finishes it with a knife.
When Carver and Hayes find a horse carcass, Hayes is surprised that the carcass is gutted. Suddenly Gideon jumps out of the horse’s womb, where he was hiding, and grabs Hayes, threatening to kill him if Carver does not give him his gun. Carver shoots Hayes. Standing opposite each other, Carver and Gideon recall the events that caused their contention. After the American Civil War, Gideon was ordered to track down a former Confederate colonel. When he arrived at Seraphim Falls, where Carver’s house was located to interrogate him, Carver was in the field. In order to make Carver’s wife (Angie Harmon) tell about his whereabouts, and believing that their house is empty, Gideon orders to set the house on fire. Flames are already engulfing the house when Carver appears. While the soldiers were holding Carver, his wife and son rushed into the house to save the baby. At that moment, the roof engulfed in fire collapsed. Gideon felt guilty for the tragedy.
The two men fight, and Gideon eventually takes over Carver. He points toward the city and tells Carver that he "will get nothing but trouble if he continues his pursuit." Gideon picks up Carver and Hayes horses and drives off. When Carver catches up with Gideon, both men are on the verge of exhaustion. They fight again. Gideon defeats Carver again, but instead of killing the enemy, he returns the gun to Carver and offers to use it by killing Gideon. Carver does not do this by throwing the gun aside. Gideon helps Carver to his feet and two men walk through the desert at a distance from each other. In the final scene, Gideon picks up the knife that he used throughout the chase and plunges it into the ground.
