Biography

Born in Kansas [2] on January 6, 1945 .

In 1969, he received a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison , defending a dissertation on the Tabebuille genus of the Bignonian family of Central America, a subject that he continued to study at the University of Washington in St. Louis , Missouri, in which he received his doctorate in 1972 with Ph.D. thesis entitled An Eco-evolutionary Study of the Bignoniaceae of South Central America [1] .

Gentry was a prolific botanist, prolific writer, energetic teacher and leader in the struggle to preserve the remaining tropical forests of the world, especially in South America [2] . Alvin Howard has devoted much of his energy to promoting and helping students from the United States, South America, and other countries. [2] Gentry was a good correspondent. [2] He collected more than 70,000 plant samples [2] . Gentry made a significant contribution to botany by describing many plant species [3] .

He died on August 3, 1993 in a plane crash in Ecuador at the age of 48 years [2] . His death was a serious blow to tropical botany and nature conservation [2] .
