The theologian is a stratovolcano 150 meters high in the surface. The underwater part of the volcano goes to a depth of 5000 meters. It is located on a small island 0.75 × 2 km in size, which is part of the Fox Islands group, 40 kilometers north of the main Aleutian volcanic arc. The size of the island changes from time to time due to the activity of the volcano. The top of the volcano has repeatedly appeared and collapsed, in connection with this, scientists are not able to find out the primary chronology of the activity of the volcano. The island consists of soils that the volcano threw to the surface in the period 1796-1992. Primary eruptions consisted of andesitic rocks, the last of basalts . 600 meters east of the Theologian is a tiny island, which is the result of the eruption of 1883, which resulted in a volcanic dome .
Since 1796, about a dozen eruptions of underwater, explosive nature have been recorded. During the July 1992 eruption, particles of ash rose to a height of more than 3 kilometers and traveled 100 km southeast of the volcano. In the initial phase of the eruption on December 27, 2016, the ash column reached a height of 9 kilometers. The last eruption is February 17, 2017. It started about 10 hours local time and was explosive. The ash column rose to a height of 7.6 km.
