The Barberry of Ottawa ( lat. Berberis × ottawensis ) is an ornamental shrub , a species of the genus Barberry ( Berberis ) of the Barberry family ( Berberidaceae ). A hybrid of the barberry of Thunberg ( Berberis thunbergii ) and the barberry of ordinary ( Berberis vulgaris ). It originated at the beginning of the 20th century in Ottawa ( Canada ).

Botanical descriptionDeciduous shrub up to 2 meters. The spikes are few, soft.
Leaves obovate, up to 3.3 cm in length and sometimes whole, sometimes dentate. Autumn color of leaves is yellow, or crimson (depending on the variety ).
Yellow flowers appear in May, in the inflorescence from 5 to 10 flowers.
Fruits are ovoid, red.
In cultureIn culture since 1889. Very popular because of winter hardiness, unpretentiousness and high growth rate.
Winter hardiness zones : from 4 to warmer.
For spring sowing, stratification is required at 1–5 ° C for 3–4 months. The seeding depth is 2–3 cm. Seed vitality is 90%, germination is 20%. Rooted 50% of summer cuttings.
