José Gómez Ortega (nicknames Joselito , Gallo and Gallito ; May 8, 1895 , Helves , Spain - May 16, 1920 , Talavera de la Reina ) - Spanish matador , considered one of the greatest in the history of Spanish bullfighting of all times [4] . Together with his main rival, Juan Belmonte , he is believed to have revolutionized the art of bullfighting in the second decade of the 20th century.

He was a hereditary bullfighter and became famous at the very beginning of his career, having received the title of bullfighter in October 1912 at the age of 17; at that time he was the youngest professional bullfighter in history. He played mainly in Madrid and Seville, the most famous victories made in 1914-1917. Together with Belmonde, he became the inventor of a new style in bullfighting, later used by Manolete , when the bullfighter remained motionless for most of the fight, allowing the bull to come close to himself and avoiding his horns with skillful manipulations, remaining in place.
Joselito died tragically in the arena from a bull’s horns at the age of 25, carrying out the so-called mano-a-mano (competitive bullfighting) with his sister’s husband, also a bullfighter. At the cemetery of San Fernando, a monument was erected to him.
