Content
Getting
- Oxidation of manganese (IV) oxide .
Physical Properties
Sodium permanganate forms dark red hygroscopic crystals.
Very soluble in water (about 15 times better than potassium permanganate ).
Forms crystalline hydrates of the composition NaMnO 4 • n H 2 O, where n = 1, 3.
Chemical Properties
- Similar to potassium permanganate .
- Decomposes on heating:
Application
- Use is limited due to strong hygroscopicity. It was used as part of a liquid catalyst for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide in the propulsion system of a V-2 rocket.
