Biography

The main tone of all Finne's literary work is hopeless pessimism , which grew out of hatred of modern bourgeois society - the oppressor of a talented individual, from hatred of a woman and rebellion against the authority of the "elders". The petty-bourgeois “rebel” Finne caustically ridiculed modern semi-romantic literature with its “naive hypocritical understanding of reality” and found a special tendency to portray the most gross and dark sides of human nature and life. The form of his works is little artistic.

Finne made his debut collection of short stories “Filosofen” (Philosopher, 1889), permeated with deep pessimism. The second collection, “Unge Syndere” (Young Sinners, 1891), a hymn of love in its primitive form of sex drive, was confiscated “for immorality”.

Released in 1890, the novel Doktor Wangs Born (Children of Dr. Wange), Finne's most powerful work, painted a bleak childhood and a warped youth of the sons and daughters of a provincial doctor who grew up in a real family hell. The strength of the novel is in the dramatic intensity of situations, in the realistic characterization of the characters. The second novel, “To Damer” (Two Ladies, 1891) is weaker; his theme - the story of two marriages - was developed in the spirit of Strindberg: married life is depicted here as a fierce struggle between a man and a woman. The main theme of two one-act plays released in 1893 : Uglen (Owl) and För Afskäden (Before Separation) is adultery. The first is artistically much higher than the second. Even weaker is the novel “Rachel” (Rachelle, 1895). The novel “Emanuel Daah” (Emanuel Do), released in the same year, is a psychological study workshop. The story "I Afrgrunden" (In the Abyss, 1898), similar to the writer's confession, is imbued with a feeling of deep tiredness and pessimism.
