The US state of Illinois consists of 102 counties [1] . According to data for 2011, the state population was 12,869,257 people, that is, 126,169 people lived on average in one district. The area of the state is 149,998 km², that is, the average area of the county is 1,470.6 km², and the average population density is 85.5 people per square kilometer.
The state capital ( Springfield ) is located in Sangamon County, the largest city of the state ( Chicago ) - in Cook County .
Etymology, "champions"
Most of the districts of Illinois are named after the commanders of the War of Independence , the Battles of Tippecan, and the Anglo-American War . Several districts are named after famous confederates , and not one in honor of the “northerners” : this is because Illinois was previously part of the extremely confederative Virginia Colony , and no new district was formed after the victory of the “northerners” over the “southerners” 1865 Two districts are called Indian tribes, one - plants, important in the food sense for Native Americans. In Illinois, two counties are named after the same person: DeWitt and Clinton — named for the naturalist, politician, senator, and governor of New York, DeWitt Clinton .
The oldest district - St. Clair , formed in 1790, the youngest - Douglas and Ford , formed in 1859.
The most populous district is Cook with a population of 5,217,080 people (40.5% of the total population of the state), the smallest is Hardin , with a population of 4,281 inhabitants.
The largest district is Maclaine , its area is 3065 km², the smallest is Putnam , whose area is 415 km².
