Life and career
Koselek was born and raised in Massilon, Ohio. As a teenager, he led a group called God Forbid. [1] After moving to Atlanta, Georgia, he met drummer Anthony Kutsos. After the couple relocated to San Francisco, California , Red House Painters formed with the addition of guitarist Gorden Mack and bassist Jerry Wessel. From 1992 to 1996, Red House Painters released a series of well-known albums featuring Koselek's intense, highly autobiographical songs. However, Koselek’s breakthrough with 4AD , followed by a major label merger that left Old Ramon's 1998 Red House Painters album on the shelf, proved very frustrating and stifled the band’s momentum. Koselek decided to tackle a series of unique solo recordings that were released by Red House Painters. In 2000, he released the solo EP Rock 'n' Roll Singer , which featured three original songs, as well as John Denver's "Around and Around" covers and three AC / DC ("Rock 'n' Roll Singer", "Bad Boy" Boogie ”and“ You Have No Retention ”). The two versions of AC / DC on the Rock'n 'Roll Singer were radical rearrangements of the originals that removed Bon Scott - written texts from their hard rock context and placed them in the delicate, acoustic settings of a "folk ballad." [2] Koselek expanded the idea in 2001 by releasing a full-length album consisting entirely of an AC / DC cover titled “ What is Next to the Moon ”. [3] These new arrangements sounded so unlike the originals that the KCRW radio host insisted that the title track was a Leonard Cohen song. This was not the first time that Kozelek decisively remade the material of others for his own purposes. With Red House Painters, he had previously done similar renovations with Simon & Garfunkel “I Am a Rock”, The Cars “All Mixed Up”, Kiss “Shock Me”, Yes “Long Ranges”, “Paul McCartney” “Silly Love Songs” and Francis Scott Kay 's Star Ornament . In the years between his band projects, Kozelek music made a number of appearances on compilations and tribute albums. He contributed the song "New Partner" to Will Oldham's album (aka Bonnie 'Prince' Billy ), "I Am Cold Rock". I am a dumb grass. " Around the same time, Koselek paid tribute to John Denver's album, “Take Me Home: A Tribute to John Denver,” featuring Will Oldham , Mission of Innocence, and Low , to name a few. The collection also featured Koselek, who covers "Around and Around" as a duet with Rachel Goswell . At the end of 2001, the Sub Pop label was released live with a limited edition of White Christmas Live . In addition to his solo material, he had several Red House Painters , songs performed in a sophisticated, acoustic style of guitar and vocals, and one version of a cappella . An early version of his current Sun Kil Moon project “Lily and Parrots” is tied to the end as a non-contact bonus track. It also has one previously unreleased song, “Admiral Fell Promises.” In 2003, Sun Kil Moon made its debut with Ghosts of the Great Highway , as well as former RHP members Jerry Wessel and Anthony Kutsos, as well as new employees Jeff Stanfield (formerly Black Lab ) and Tim Mooney from the American Music Club . Their subsequent efforts appeared in 2005 on the newly formed Kozelek Caldo Verde Records . Called " Tiny Cities ", the album is composed entirely of Modest Mouse song covers. Again, the options for the Kozelek cover are very different from the originals. In a February 2014 interview with Seattle Stranger, Koselek commented that he “never heard from Modest Mouse” about what they think about the recording. [four]
In 2006, Koselek was invited by the Toronto label indie rock Paper Bag Records to exclusively promote their “ See You on the Moon!” See you on the moon! Songs for Kids of All Ages with his original song “Leo and Luna”. Then, in November 2006, Koselek released a live album called ' Little Drummer Boy Live '. On two discs of the album, he plays songs from his solo career, covers and materials from catalogs of both red artist houses and Sun Kil Moon. Koselek returned in 2008 with the release of Sun Kil Moon 's third album, ' April '. '' The album includes 11 new recordings, including guest vocal recordings by Ben Gibbard , Will Oldham and Eric Pollard. The release of the new album also led to the re-release of Nights of Passed Over, a 256-page, complete book of all lyrics for Kozelek's solo songs, Red House Painters, and Sun Kil Moon's songs. It also contains collections, handwritten lyrics and a foreword by Kozelek himself. The original edition of this book was released in 2002 in Portugal and showed all the lyrics up to this point, printed in English and Portuguese. The updated edition extends to its current days, Sun Kil Moon, and the book also includes a 12-track bonus disc called " Nights LP ", which presents live and rare versions of songs from 1996 to 2007. sold exclusively on its label link website and limited to 2,500 copies . On December 9, 2008, Kozelek and Caldo Verde Records released The Final LP , a CD collection of 10 unreleased tracks, including the covers of songs by Stephen Sondheim , Will Oldham,, Hüsker Dü and Low among others, as well as two previously unreleased instrumental. Two recently recorded live albums, “ Find Me, Ruben Olivares: Live in Spain ” and “ Lost Verses Live, ” followed in the spring of 2009. On April 23, 2010, the fourth Sun Kil Moon album, “ Admiral Fell Promises, ” was released. The album was released on July 13, 2010. [6] [7] [8]
On August 16, 2011, a documentary called “Mark Koselek: On Tour” was released on Caldo Verde Records. The film was shot during European / North American Mark Kozelek 2010 tours and early 2011. In 2012, an article on Queensberry-Rules.com, written by full-time writer Mark Ortega, showed Kozelek's passion for boxing, which inspired the title of his project Sun Kil Moon, as well as several songs on Desertshore's album.
“Their backstory is extremely harsh, and they work very hard to advance in their careers. I attended the Battle of Manny Pacquiao Agapito Sanchez in San Francisco in 2001. When I heard that Sanchez was killed shortly afterwards, it had a profound effect. It hurts me when someone dies young, but when you see the background of these guys and the path they took to try to find some light in their life It’s painful to see them die young. ” [9]
Sun Kil Moon's fifth album, " The Leaves, " was released on Caldo Verde Records on May 29, 2012. On the whole, his 17 tracks are by far the most carefree approach to writing Kozelek songs, although the songs remain autobiographical and sharp. Koselek also participated as a vocalist and bassist for Desertshore , a band featuring Red House Painters guitarist Phil Carney, classically trained pianist Chris Connolly and most recently Sun Keel Moon drummer Mike Stevens. His first collaboration with Desertshore appeared on the band's second studio album, “Drawing Threes” (released November 22, 2011, Caldo Verde Records ). Koselek appeared in 6 of 10 tracks as a vocalist and bass player. He played a more important role in his third studio album, entitled “ Mark Kozelek & Desertshore ” (released August 20, 2013, Caldo Verde Records ), where he is featured as a vocalist and bassist on all 10 tracks. In the same year, Koselek released the album “ Perils From the Sea, ” an album collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Jimmy LaValle of The Album Leaf and covers the album “ Like Rats ,” ” [10] In 2014, Sun Kil Moon released“ Benji ”with wide acclaim , including 9.2 points from Pitchfork and 85 from the critical rating site, [[Metacritic]]. “No Ripcord” calls it “The Most Intimate Work of Koselek” and Kitty Empire from “The Observer ”, “added that“ it is quite possible, this is the most difficult work of this difficult artist ”. The sixth album Sun Kil Moon from the original material "Universal Themes" was released on June 2, 2015. [11] The drummer Steve Shelley again appeared on the album, who had previously played drums on [[Benji (album] | Benji]], and then released the album in 2017, “Common As Light And Love Are Red Valleys Of Blood”,
Vocal style
At one time with both red artists and Sun Kil Moon, as well as during his solo career, Koselek was known for his obsessive baritone vocal style. [12] [13]
Producing
Koselek, who acted as a producer on every album released by his Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon bands, as well as his solo album, released his debut album with friend singer- songwriter Alan Sparkhawk , in the side project Sparhawk Gospel Rise Chorus (album), Gospel Rebellion Choir .
Other activities
Koselek was also involved in acting. A friend and director, Cameron Crowe, shot it in his film “Almost Famous” (1999) as Larry Fellows (bassist in [[Stillwater (fictional band) [Stillwater]]) and Vanilla Sky (2001). [14] In 2005, he appeared in Steve Martin 's film " Saleswoman, " playing a musician who is friends and coaches the character of Jason Schwartzman . Koselek also performed the song “Lily and Parrots” (Sun Kil Moon song) in the film. Koselek contributes to the soundtrack of Paolo Sorrentino 's film " Youth ."
