Frank's Growth Mechanism - Van der Merwe

The Frank – van der Merwe growth mechanism, or the layered growth mechanism ( Frank – van der Merwe growth mode ) is one of the three main growth mechanisms for thin films, which describes the layered growth of films.

Description

Layer-by-layer growth by the Frank-van der Merwe mechanism refers to the case when the atoms of the film are more strongly bound to the substrate than to each other. As a result of this, the growth of the next layer does not begin until the formation of the previous one is complete, that is, strictly two-dimensional growth takes place. After the formation of the first layer, the mechanism may change, therefore, in the case of a transition to island growth, the Stransky – Krastanov growth mechanism is realized .
