The first world record in the women's 200-meter race was recorded by the International Federation of Women's Sports (FΓ©dΓ©ration Sportive FΓ©minine Internationale, FSFI) in 1922. In 1936, FSFI became part of the IAAF . Until 1951, the IAAF did not distinguish records set on tracks with bends and on straight tracks. After 1976, all records set on straight tracks were canceled.

In countries with the English system of measures instead of the 200-meter distance, athletes often performed at a distance of 220 yards (201.17 m). The extra meter of distance worsened the result by about 0.1 seconds, so if the result was 220 yards greater than or repeated the world record for a distance of 200 meters, it was counted as a record or a repetition of a record for a 200-meter distance. In the table, such results are marked with the letter "y".

Some world records for various reasons have not been ratified by the IAAF [1] . Ratified and not ratified records are indicated in the table by the color:

Record not ratified

On September 20, 2012, the IAAF (and before it FSFI) ratified 26 world records in this discipline [2] .

Manual Stopwatch (1922-1976)

Until January 1, 1975, official world records in athletics were recorded by a manual stopwatch, although since the 1930s automatic timekeeping was used occasionally at competitions. In the table below, the alternative time for the electronic stopwatch (if any) is shown in the remarks column. By the end of the 1960s, the manual stopwatch was already becoming an anachronism. In all major competitions, an electronic stopwatch is used (first in parallel with manual timekeeping, and then without it). The readings of the manual and electronic stopwatches often differed (the difference reached 0.3 s), and the manual stopwatch, as a rule, showed the best result. Therefore, the problem of comparability of results was quite acute. When the result with an accuracy of tenths of a second was obtained not by a manual stopwatch, but by rounding the electronic stopwatch, a small amount was taken from the electronic stopwatch (0.05-0.24 s), although they were not always consistent in this.

Electronic stopwatch (since 1975)

As early as the 1920s, a manual stopwatch that measured time with an accuracy of 0.1 s did not meet the requirements of objective refereeing in competitions at short distances. Since it was extremely difficult to improve the world record by 0.1 s, dozens of athletes officially showed the same time and were co-authors of world records. In addition, the process of measuring time was influenced by the β€œhuman factor”, for example, the reaction time of the timekeeper. As a result, by the end of the 1960s, the manual stopwatch became universally superseded by automatic electronic. But since the results were still recorded with an accuracy of 0.1 s, and there were no clear rules for rounding, various incidents arose. For example, in 1972, when Renata Shteher set the world record of 22.4 seconds, the electronic stopwatch recorded 22.40 seconds. The following year, it also improved the world record by 0.3 s (22.1 s), although the electronic stopwatch recorded a result of just 0.02 s better (22.38 s).

Only on January 1, 1975, the registration of world records on an electronic stopwatch for distances less than 400 meters was officially introduced. As the first "electronic" record, the result of 22.21 s was shown in 1974 by Irene Shevinska. Backdating some results were included in the table since 1952, for which the readings of the electronic stopwatch were known [2] .
