Demographics
According to the 2001 South African National Census and subsequent calculations, Khara Hayes, which covers Upington and surrounding towns, amounted to: 100,920 people.
There are 20.939 formal households, of which 63.7% own homes, 18.4% rent and 17.9% borrow for free. 86.8% of all residential buildings use electricity as their main source of energy, while 96.4% of households have access to water supply and only 14.6% of single-headed households. [2]
Colored people make up 50.0% of the population, followed by Black Africans 39.8%, White 10.0%, and Asians 0.2%. 38.2% of the population is 24 years old and 12% are over 65 years old. The average age in the city is 32 years, and for every 100 females, there are 128.6 males.
Wine industry
Most of the wine from Upington is produced by Orange River Wine Cellars ( OWC ). The company has six warehouses in the area, all of them on the banks of the Orange River. Wines from OWC are exported to Europe and the USA. A number of private basements also exist in the area. About 40% of Khara Hayes residents of South Africa are engaged in grape export.
