Shen Quan was born in County Zhejiang Province [1] . His works belong to the genre of " flowers and birds ", they can be traced to the influence of such masters of this genre as Bian Jingzhao and Lu Ji . The artist worked in a very realistic manner and had many students and patrons.
In 1731, Shen Quan arrived to Japan at the official invitation. During his two years in Nagasaki, the artist taught a large number of students, the most talented of whom was Kumasiro Juhi, who later became the founder of the Nampin-ha school (from the Japanese pronunciation of Shen Nanping - Xing Nampin) and the teacher of such famous artists as So Siseki , Mori Ransai , Kakutei , Maruyama Oko , Ganku, and others. The Nampin-ha school later had a strong influence on all Japanese painting of the Edo period, including Katsushiku Hokusai .
His paintings were extremely popular among the Japanese. Shen Quan continued to send his work to Japanese friends, fans and patrons after returning to China in 1733.
