SmartDrive (SMARTDRV) is a disk caching program that came with the MS-DOS operating system from version 4.01 to 6.22 and with Windows 3.x. The program increases the speed of data exchange with the hard drive by storing in the RAM memory information that is accessed most often.

Earlier versions of SmartDrive were loaded as the SMARTDRV.SYS driver using the CONFIG.SYS file. Later versions are represented by the SMARTDRV.EXE executable file, which is usually launched at system startup using the AUTOEXEC.BAT file (or the install = SMARTDRV.EXE command in CONFIG.SYS).
