The Osterland dialect ( German Osterländisch ) is a German dialect , one of the Thuringian-Upper Saxon dialects that still has circulation in Saxony , near Leipzig . In Saxony-Anhalt, the dialect takes the form of a North Upper Saxon and is distributed mainly near Wittenberg , Bitterfeld-Wolfen and Jessen . Own version of the Osterlandic, called the north-eastern Osterlandic dialect , is common in Halle and further towards Brandenburg , near Herzberg , Bad Liebenverd and Elsterverd . Near Schraden , the Schraden Osterlandic dialect is widespread.

The emergence of the dialect belongs to the XI-XIII centuries. It was based on the Low German dialects of northwestern Germany. The name "Osterland" comes from the toponym Osterland (a region in the Thuringian-Saxon region).
