Redfield, James

James Redfield grew up in the countryside near the city of Birmingham (Alabama) . He studied the foundations of Eastern philosophy (including Taoism and Zen ) at Auburn University . For 15 years he worked as a medical practitioner, helping teenagers who have been abused. During this period, he joined the movement for the development of human potential . In 1989, James quit his job as a doctor to devote himself to writing. His interests lay in the synthesis of ideas of interactive psychology, eastern and western philosophy, ecology, history and mysticism.

In 1993, James published the book Celestine Prophecies at his own expense. The huge interest on the part of readers and booksellers made this book one of the most successful of those published at its own expense. In March 1994, Warner Books bought the rights to the publication and issued a hardcover edition. The book quickly took first place on the New York Times bestseller list.
