Club career
Fernandez began his handball career at the Toulouse Union club, from where in 1999 he moved to one of the strongest clubs in France Montpellier , with whom he twice became the champion of France, and also won the French Cup three times in 2000 and 2002. In 2002, Jerome moved to Spanish Barcelona , in which he played 6 seasons. During this time, Fernandez managed to become one of the team leaders and won many trophies with her, the most valuable of which was the victory in the Champions League in the 2004/05 season. In 2008, Fernandez, who lost his place in the main team of the Catalans, moved to the camp of the current winner of the Champions League Ciudad Real and in the first season became the winner of the Champions League handball. Jerome began the 2010/2011 season as part of another reigning Champions League winner in German Kiel , where he was invited as a substitute for the injured Daniel Narsiss . In 2011, Fernandez decided to return to France to the Toulouse Phoenix club in order to better prepare for the Olympic Games .
Team Career
In the French national team, Jerome Fernandez made his debut on November 30, 1997 in a duel with the Czech national team. In 2000, as part of the French team, he took part in the Summer Olympic Games in Sydney . The French team was able to reach the quarterfinals, but lost there to the Yugoslav national team 21:26. Fernandez at that tournament took part in six meetings and scored 23 points. In 2001, at the home world championships, the French team with Fernandez as part of the first time in their history won the world title.
In 2004, Fernandez took part in the summer Olympic Games for the second time in his career. Again, like 4 years ago, the French team stopped at the quarter-finals, losing to the Russian team 24:26. Fernandez himself took part in all matches of the tournament and scored 31 points.
In 2008, the French team won the gold of the Olympic Games for the first time in its history. Fernandez broke his arm in a group stage match against Croatia. The leadership of the French national team was forced to remove Fernandez from the national team, replacing him with Cedric Party . Despite the withdrawal from the composition, the IOC handed Fernandez a gold medal of the Olympic Games and allowed the athlete to go up to the podium with the team. In 2009 and 2011, Fernandez in the French national team twice in a row became the world champion.
In 2012, Fernandez as part of the French team took part in his fourth Olympic Games . The French team was able to defend its title, obtained four years ago in Beijing , and Fernandez became one of the tournament's top scorers, scoring 30 goals. In January 2013, Fernandez as part of the French team took part in the World Cup in Spain . However, the French could not repeat the success of the last two championships. In the quarterfinals of the tournament, the French team lost to the younger and faster Croatian national team at 22:30 and took 6th place in the tournament.
Twice in his career, Fernandez became the champion of Europe ( 2006 and 2010 ).
