Biography
William Bertram Turrill was born in Woodstock on June 14, 1890 [2] .
In 1909, he was hired as a temporary assistant in the herbarium of the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens , and in 1914 as a permanent assistant [2] . In 1915, Turrill received a bachelor's degree in botany from the University of London [2] .
In the years 1916 - 1918, William Bertram served in the Royal Military Medical Corps during the First World War (primarily in Macedonia ); he later returned to Kew. [2] In 1922, Turrill received a master 's degree in botany from the University of London, and in 1928 a Ph.D. in botany [2] .
In 1950 - 1951, Turrill was president of the British Environmental Society [2] . In 1953, he received the Veitch memorial gold medal of the Royal Horticultural Society [2] . In 1955, William Bertram received the Order of the British Empire , and in 1958 - the Linnaeus Medal [2] . In the same year, he was vice president of the Linnaeus Society of London , and also became a member of the Royal Society of London [2] . William Bertram described over 380 plant species [4] .
William Bertram Turrill died in Surrey on December 15, 1961. [2]
