Biography
Maria Forescu was born on January 15, 1875 in the city of Chernivtsi (at that time it was the center of the Duchy of Bukovina and was located on the territory of Austria-Hungary , now it is part of Ukraine ). She was educated at the women's hostel in Prague , then, having felt an interest in the theater , she took vocal and acting lessons. At the end of the century, she began her career as a singer, performing in theaters in Vienna . Having quickly achieved fame, she toured Europe , visiting, among others, the cities of Amsterdam , Petersburg , Hamburg , Berlin and Munich .
In 1911, Maria made her debut in silent films, then, after almost a ten-year break, she left the stage and completely focused on the film career. The actress, who had by then reached the age of forty, starred primarily in secondary roles, receiving leading roles only occasionally.
In the era of silent cinema, she appeared in more than 80 films. The most notable of them are “ Peer Gynt ” based on the play by Ibsen , “ Maritstsa ” by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau ( 1922 ), “ Joyless Lane ” by Georg Pabst ( 1925 ). With the advent of the era of sound cinema, Maria continued to work: she played the age-related roles of housekeepers, grandmothers, socialite ladies, etc.
Her career ended in 1933 due to the Nazis coming to power. The actress, being of Jewish origin, lost all civil rights and the right to work. She settled in Berlin and lived very secluded until November 23, 1943 , until she was arrested and deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp, where she died, like thousands of other prisoners. The exact date of her death is unknown.
