History
The Habsburgs, who led the Duchy of Burgundy , controlled the Duchy of Brabant , Gennegau , Holland and Flanders . Karl Egmont controlled Geldern, Groningen and part of Frisia .
In the years 1502 - 1515, the Habsburgs unsuccessfully tried to return Geldern, which belonged to their House in the period 1473 - 1492 . Karl Egmont also unsuccessfully tried to annex some of the territories of the modern province of Overijssel , in those years controlled by the Utrecht bishopric . He only managed to take Arnhem from the Habsburgs [2] . Since 1514, the Duke of Saxony Georg the Bearded entered into an alliance with Burgundy. However, having captured several cities , in May 1515 he sold them to the Habsburgs. The Friezes led by Pierre Gerlofs Donia and Wyrd Yelkam , on the contrary, supported Geldern.
In 1522, Georg Schenck van Toutenburg managed to defeat the Frisians and capture Yelkam, later he was publicly beheaded . By the end of 1524, most of Frisia was already run by the Habsburg staff halter.
On October 20, 1528 in Gorinchem, between Charles Egmont and Charles V , an Agreement was concluded that recognized the right of the Duke of Karl Egmont to Geldern, Groningen and Drenthe , but as the feudal possessions of the Holy Roman Emperor . However, the clashes continued until 1536 , when peace was concluded between the Burgundy and Geldern after the Battle of Heiligerley .
Two years later, the Duke of Carl van Egmont of Geldern died in Arnhem . He was one of the last independent feudal rulers of the Netherlands . He did not have legal children. Charles V initially transferred the duchy to the Clew House , but in 1543 he occupied Geldern. [3]
