Biography
Christian August Lobek was born in Naumburg on June 5, 1781. He studied in Jena and Leipzig, then settled in Wittenberg in 1802 and began working as a private assistant professor, and in 1810 he was appointed professor at the university. Four years later, he became head of the Department of Rhetoric and Ancient Literature in Koenigsberg, which he occupied for almost his entire life, leaving it only two years before his death. Among his many students was, in particular, Franz Spitzner .
His activity was devoted to the history of Greek mythology, the study of Greek language and literature. His greatest work, Aglaophamus (1829), remained for many decades a valuable resource for students. Known as a major and authoritative scientist of his time, but also as a negative attitude to comparative studies (considering that it takes a lifetime to acquire deep knowledge in a particular language).
The first serious age-related complaints occurred in 1857, so soon after that he refused his studies. Three years later, he died peacefully in his sleep. [2] August Lobek died on August 25, 1860 in the city of KΓΆnigsberg.
