Shukman, Harold

Harold Shukman ( born Harold Shukman ; March 23, 1931 , London - July 11, 2012 , London) - British historian , leading specialist in Russian history [1] ; writer and translator. Translated into English the novel " Children of the Arbat " by A. N. Rybakov and the work of D. A. Volkogonov .

Biography

Born in 1931 in London in a family of emigrants from Russia [2] David and Maria Shukman [3] .

In 1951-1953, he served in the Royal Air Force of Great Britain as a translator from the Russian language and rose to the rank of sergeant .

In 1956 he graduated from the University of Nottingham , where in 1958 he became a senior research fellow.

In 1960, he received a doctorate in history from the University of Oxford for a dissertation on the Bund and spent a year as a postdoctoral student at Harvard and Stanford University . In the same year, he was elected a junior research fellow at the College of St. Anthony Oxford University, where he worked until 1998 and was elected an honorary member.

In 1969 - 1998 he taught at the College of St. Anthony.

In 1981 - 1991 - Director of the Russian Center at Oxford University.

He was a research fellow at Harvard and Stanford Universities [1] . Over the years, he taught the Russian language course for Masters at Oxford University.

He died of cancer at the age of 81. The funeral was held on July 13, 2012 at the Volverkot cemetery. [four]
