Henry Jarvis Raymond ( January 24, 1820 , Lima, New York - June 18, 1869 , New York) is an American journalist and politician, vice-governor of New York. Founder of The New York Times .

He learned to read early, studied at the seminary of the episcopal church , and graduated with honors from the University of Vermont in 1840. October 24, 1843 married Juliet Weaver; in marriage they had seven children.
From 1841 to 1851 he worked as a journalist in various newspapers, including the New York Tribune under the leadership of Horace Greeley. In 1851, together with his partner George Jones, he founded the newspaper The New York Times, setting himself the goal of covering the news in a neutral manner, and remained its editor in chief until his death. In 1850-1851 he was a deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the State of New York (in 1851 also a speaker). In 1855-1856 he was vice-governor of New York. He was a member of the Republican Party , playing a large role in its formation.
Died in New York, buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn .
