After Darth Vader killed Galen's father, the boy grew up under the supervision of a Sith lord and became his secret student under the name "Starkiller" [1] . Whitver does not consider the character a political killer , he describes him as a "Ball of destructive power " [3] [4] .

On the GameSpot website , in the vote “The Best Character of Video Games of All Time”, Starkiller lost in the first round to Nico Bellic [7] .
Creation History
George Lucas asked the team working on The Force Unleashed to create an entirely new character - a friendly Sith. [8] Before they got the famous version of Starkiller, the developers proposed a lot of ideas: a smuggler like Han Solo , a Wookiee rebel hero, a certain “last Skywalker” and a mercenary with many different devices [8] [ 9] [10] . When developing the Starkiller image, feedback from various testers and people at LucasArts was taken into account [8] . The developers deliberately decided not to name his real name in the game, but Sean Williams , as the author of the novel, decided that the character should have a name [11] . As a result, the name “Galen Marek” was used in the novel [12] .
Galen Marek was created as the opposite of Luke Skywalker [3] [13] , and his name comes from “Annikin Starkiller” ( English “Annikin Starkiller” ) - the name of Luke Skywalker in an earlier version of the script for the movie “ New Hope ” [11] [14 ] . The developers felt that during the creation of the character, his characteristics should not be strictly defined by any framework. They also did not want Starkiller to be a clearly negative hero. To balance his character, relations with other actors were used, while the developers tried to hide information about Marek’s past as much as possible. They tried to make the character unemotional, reducing his participation in dialogs and outwardly performing scenes so that the player could tell how Starkiller felt [15] . The developers tried to show that Galen Marek could also belong to the original Star Wars trilogy, making what is happening in the game faster and events more intense. In an interview with The Force Unleashed series general manager Hayden Blackman, published in The Guardian , it was said that most test players thought: the character should completely atone for the end of the game [16] .
Starkiller got his voice and facial features from American actor Sam Whitver . According to Blackman, his staff strongly doubted Whitver, but he was still better than the rest of the candidates: "he already penetrated the character’s mind." To create the appearance of Marek, motion capture technology was used. Hayden Blackman called it the new approach at LucasArts . He also compares Sam with Bill Nyei , who in turn played Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean series [2] . Sam Whitver not only gave the character an outward resemblance, but also put new ideas into him, as well as a sense of humanity [15] . Whitver also said that he did not mind returning to the role of Starkiller in the future. [13]
During the design of The Force Unleashed II, the developers were going to replace the main character of the series with another “user of the force ” or some character from the Star Wars universe . But in the end, they decided to leave Galen Marek as a protagonist , as they became very attached to him and wanted to show more stories about the character and build a franchise around him [17] . Blackman commented on the return of Starkiller from the world of the dead as follows: “everything made sense and fell into place” [17] . The developers tried to make The Force Unleashed more focused on the main character [17] [18] , focusing on Starkiller's search for his true identity [18] .
Feature
Imagine: you have the main character of the epic - this is Darth Vader. Also, you have the most heroic character - this is Luke Skywalker. And then, you get the coolest character - Starkiller. - Sam Whitver , IGN [13] |
According to Whitver, he sees the character as consisting of several parts taken from various actors: "two parts of Han Solo, one part of Darth Maul , one Indiana Jones ... and most of it consists of Luke Skywalker," noting that "behind all this this guy with his eyes wide open is trying to figure out what the hell to do. ” According to Whitver, the character and personality of Marek depends on who he communicates with and in what circumstances. He also called him a truly interesting guy [13] . Despite the fact that at the beginning of the first part of the game he acts as a villain, Blackman called him a man who suffered a loss in childhood [15] .
Hayden Blackman noted that in the first Force Unleashed, Starkiller was a hunter, while in the second part he was a fugitive [18] . Matt Filbrandt, one of the producers of The Force Unleashed II , said that Galen Marek in the second part of the game is trying to find answers to who he is and what it means: to be human [19] .
Appearances
Starkiller made his debut outside the Star Wars universe. The first appearance of the character occurred in the game Soulcalibur IV . Like Darth Vader and Yoda - he is a guest character. [20] In this game, he is known only under the name "Apprentice." According to the plot of the game: Marek is sent with the task of exploring a split in space, which is growing all the time. The student goes through a split and ends up in the Soulcalibur universe. After defeating Algol, he returns to Vader without souls (Edge and Calibur), considering them useless [21] . Vader punishes him for Starkiller's disobedience by using the suffocation of the Force [21] , because of which the Student takes out his lightsaber and prepares to fight his teacher [22] . Starkiller also appears in Star Wars: Visions of the Blade , an endless comic book crossover that focuses on combining the Soulcalibur and Star Wars universes [23] .
In the video game, as well as in adaptations of the novel and comics, Darth Vader sends his apprentice to kill the Jedi who were able to survive the Great Extermination of (the event depicted in the third episode ) [24] [25] . At first, the existence of Starkiller is kept secret [26] , but after he was discovered by the Emperor , Vader sends him to find the enemies of the Empire and unite them [27] . Later, Lord Vader betrays his student and tries to kill those who managed to unite against the Empire, but Marek sacrifices his life for the rebels and becomes a martyr for them [28] [29] . During his assignments, Galen falls in love with Juneau Eclipse, the pilot of the Empire. If the player chooses a non-canonical ending, then Starkiller tries to kill Vader instead of the Emperor, but loses the battle and becomes a slave dressed in armor similar to Darth Vader's armor. “Lord Starkiller” appears in this costume in the Ultimate Sith Edition expansion pack, which continues the path of the dark side as the story “What if?” [30] [31] . However, the second ending is considered canonical - the ending of the bright side, which was used in adapting the novel and the sequel to the game [1] [28] .
According to the plot of the sequel to comics, romance and video games, the protagonist is a clone of Galen Marek. The clone is haunted by visions in the form of memoirs of the real Starkiller [19] . After escaping from Camino , Starkiller goes in search of an answer to the question: who is he and his beloved Juno Eclipse, who was kidnapped by Darth Vader [19] [32] . In the game, as well as in the previous one, there are two endings. If the player chooses the bright side, then Starkiller defeats Vader, but spares and captures him, also saves Juno [33] . However, if the player chooses the dark side, not the canonical one, Starkiller tries to finish off Vader, but he is stopped and killed by another successfully trained clone [33] . “Dark Clone” appears in additionally downloadable content , which takes place on Endor [34] .
Starkiller appears in Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars under the name " Vader Apprentice " as a hidden character. To open it, you need to collect all the mini-sets at the level of "Defenders of the World."
Criticism and reviews
UGO Networks placed the character in 50th place in the top Star Wars characters of the extended universe [35] . Jesse Scheden called the appearance of Starkiller in Soulcalibur IV the second best guest character in the series: “The story of Soulcalibur IV about the dichotomy of good and evil, corruption and redemption ... Starkiller is a dark Jedi who is at a crossroads. He can either serve his master and take control of the galaxy, or escape and go in search of his fate ” [36] , he later added Starkiller to the list of characters who could participate in modern fighting game [37] . Chris Bufa put the character on the 24th place in the list of handsome gamers, saying that "no one can compare with this bad boy" [38] . [41] Jesse Scheden called Starkiller one of the best actors in video games: “He released the Force as we had never been shown in films, and ultimately gave hope to a distant, distant galaxy” [42] .

Chris Bufa put Starkiller on the 19th place in the list of 25 antiheroes , where he commented: “The thought that he cut his way through the good guys like Sith filled us with murderous fun”, he also praised the character for switching to the bright side [44] . Jesse Scheden considered the character’s story “good and complete,” and expressed the idea that his appearance in the upcoming Star Wars television series was would be undesirable [5] . On the GameSpot website , in the “Best Video Game Character of All Time” vote, the Apprentice (as presented in Soulcalibur IV) lost in the first round against Nico Bellic, a character from Grand Theft Auto IV - Starkiller received 44.9% of the vote [7] . Readers of Game Informer magazine put Galen Marek in 17th place in the top of video game characters [47] .
Denis Gundorov, editor of the magazine “ Best Computer Games ”, criticized the appearance of Starkiller in the classic trilogy (non-canonical ending), although he also noted that such an outcome coincides with the dogmatic rule of the Sith [48] . Kirill Tokarev, also an editor from LKI , after the release of Force Unleashed II called him too strong a character. He compares Marek’s strength with Kratos from the God of War series and alludes to his superiority over Kyle Katarn , a character in the extended Star Wars universe [49] . Absolute Games website reviewer Vladimir Pavlov praised the character’s wardrobe: “on the look of every planet visited, not counting bonus reincarnations” and his fighting skills, in particular sword possession and learning ability [50] . In his review, in the Igromania magazine, Roman Epishin positively assessed his skills in owning the Force and lightsaber [51] . Olga Krapivenko, a columnist for 3DNews Daily Digital Digest , called Starkiller the perfect killer. Adamant, decisive and proud by nature, he fought not for life, but for death. Describing him as a cold-blooded, cruel and skillful warrior, she stated that only hard work developed his abilities and only treacherous betrayal led the character to death [52] .
