Another brother - Khalil Ilyaev - was a mathematician, held leadership positions in the Central Asian education system. Sister - Mahuba - was one of the first girls of the Kazakh women who were educated in Moscow. In the 30s, like many representatives of the intelligentsia, the family came under Stalin's political repression. Gani Ilyaev lost his father and two brothers.
The formation of the personality of the future artist took place in a difficult historical period. The 20th century brought not only socio-political formations to the Kazakh steppe, but also changed the world outlook, the world outlook of the nomad. A sharp change in ideology, spiritual life took place in an atmosphere of intense struggle.
He was educated at the Tashkent Kazakh Pedagogical College and at the art school. Here he was lucky to study in the class of the People's Artist of Uzbekistan A.N. Volkov, with a magnificent painter and a deeply original master. By the thirties, creative work also took place in the workshop of the USSR People's Artist, academician U. Tansykbaev. All this contributed to the formation of a young artist.
But the war began. G. I. Ilyaev - a participant in the Great Patriotic War. His frontline biography began with the battle for the Dnieper, the liberation of Kiev. He was awarded orders and medals of the USSR.
A story about the artist’s life and work was published in the Zhalyn publishing house, the already mentioned album, a documentary was shot at the Kazakhfilm film studio, Signs of Eternity, directed by R. Alpiev. In the city of Shymkent, the street on which the artist lived was named after him. The name of Gani Ilyaev is included in the big encyclopedia of the Kazakh SSR. Gani Ilyaev was inherent in an active life position. He did not lock himself in his workshop, creating works, collecting folk art. He understood his life plan much more broadly. The artist raised issues of state support for folk crafts. This was true in his time, since they looked at folk art as a secondary, applied art, maybe even outliving its own age, a thing of the past. The ardent love of folk art, which goes back centuries of history, the desire to preserve and continue the ancient traditions, are fully reflected in the creative work of Gani Ilyaev.
