In August 1943 he took part in the battles near Staraya Russa . In September, his regiment as part of the division was relocated to the Kharkov region. On the night of October 1, 1943, he crossed the Dnieper at the village of Perevolochna (now the village of Svetlogorsk, Kobelyak district, Poltava region). In the battles on the bridgehead from October 2 to 14, the calculation of I. Ya. Voronkov participated in repelling 6 counterattacks, while destroying 4 tanks, 2 armored vehicles, 6 cars and before the enemy’s manpower platoon.

In October 1943 there were heavy battles for the liberation of Soviet Ukraine. The enemy, clinging to each settlement, under the onslaught of our troops, retreated to the west.

Under strong, hurricane fire from the enemy’s guard, the senior sergeant of the airborne guards artillery regiment Ivan Yakovlevich Voronkov, using resources at hand, showing resourcefulness and courage, crossed the Dnieper in the Dnipropetrovsk region near the village of Perevalochnaya. With his fire, he ensured the advance of our infantry and kept a busy bridgehead.

For two weeks of ongoing battles from October 1 to October 14, 1943, Ivan Voronkov participated in repelling the six tank attacks of the Nazis. During the battles, being in the battle formations of the infantry, Voronkov destroyed two heavy and two medium German tanks with the fire of his guns, as well as two enemy armored vehicles. Six cars were burned and destroyed before the Nazi infantry platoon.

Especially bloody, fierce battles were on October 14, 1943. The enemy threw fresh forces into the attack. The onslaught of the Nazis did not stop for a minute. One attack followed another. The communist Voronkov, the party organizer of the unit, was a model for soldiers and commanders.

Before the guards regiment, in which Ivan Yakovlevich fought, the task was set: to expand the bridgehead on the seized right bank of the Dnieper in the vicinity of the village of Dneprokamenki. The sergeant Voronkov showed remarkable heroism to the guard when Hitler tanks went into battle. Moving forward, he knocked out two Nazi tanks, was seriously wounded, but did not leave the battle. All fighters from his calculation were killed. Bleeding and losing last strength, the Communist Voronkov continued to fire, inflicting heavy damage on the enemy in manpower. The Nazis surrounded the Siberian warrior, but he stubbornly continued to conduct an unequal battle. Surrounded and doomed to death, he did not flinch; enemy tanks did not pass.

Soon, Ivan Yakovlevich was repeatedly injured, but continued to smash the enemy. He burned down with his gun from the explosion of enemy shells, but did not miss the tanks and infantry of the enemy.

He was buried in the mass grave of the village of Dneprovokamenka, Verkhnedneprovsky district, Dnipropetrovsk region ( Ukraine ).
