Despite the location of the West Side, its active development began only with the laying of an elevated railway along 9th Avenue in the 1870s. With the advent of the Great Depression up to the 1960s, the region experienced a decline, with mostly people living in it with little prosperity [2] . In total, there were approximately 420,000 inhabitants in the West Side in 2009. [3]
The main highways serving the West Side are the Henry Hudson Park Highway (in the north) and the West Side Highway (in the south). The IND Eighth Avenue and IRT Broadway - Seventh Avenue lines of the New York Subway run under the West Side.
