Biography

Bernhard's father is a Swiss engineer and co-owner of an engineering plant, his mother is an Austrian with Hungarian roots. After graduating from school in Silesia, Wicky studied art, history and German studies at the University of Breslav , in 1938 he transferred to an acting school at the Berlin State Drama Theater. In 1939, Wicca was arrested and placed for several months in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp for membership in a youth organization. After his release, he moved to Vienna and entered the Max Reinhardt seminar. In 1939-1940 he took part in the filming of the film “The Postman ” based on Pushkin ’s novel “ Station Warden ”, worked in theaters of Vienna, Bremen, Basel and Zurich. He participated in the productions of the Salzburg Festival . At the beginning of 1945, he married actress Agness Fink , and together before the war ended, they went to work in the Zurich Drama Theater, where Wicca met and made friends with the playwright Friedrich Durrenmatt .

In 1950, the actor made a real film debut in the film Shooting Star , followed by The Last Bridge (1953) and This happened on July 20 (1955). Impressed by a photo exhibition organized by Magnum in Lucerne , Wicky decided to take up photography. He asked director Helmut Koytner to take him as an assistant operator of the film "Monpti" (1957). In 1958, he first directed himself, making the documentary "Why Are They Against Us?" International fame came to Wicca suddenly in 1959 thanks to the film "Bridge" - the tragic story of the senseless defense of the bridge at the end of World War II . In subsequent years, Bernhard Wicky continued to direct. The last work of Wicca is the film adaptation of Joseph Roth ’s novel "The Web . " This film can be seen as a creative testament of the director, who drew attention to the danger of the German bourgeoisie being carried away by right-wing radical ideology and anti-Semitism in the era of the Weimar Republic .

After the director’s death in 2001, the Bernhard Wicca Memorial Fund was established in Munich, which since 2002 has been awarded the German Cinema Peace Prize - the Bernhard Wicca Prize . Another Bernhard Wicca film award of € 15,000 since 2000 has been awarded in East Frisian Emden. Bernhard Wicky is buried at the Nymphenburg Cemetery in Munich.
