Ivan Goshnyak ( Serb. Ivan Goshgak / Ivan Gošnjak ; June 10, 1909 , Ogulin - February 8, 1980 , Belgrade ) - Yugoslav military and political figure, participant of the Civil War in Spain and World War II. General of the Army of the Yugoslav People’s Army, Hero of the Socialist Labor of Yugoslavia, National Hero of Yugoslavia. In the period from January 14, 1953 to May 16, 1967 served as the Federal Secretary for Defense of the SFRY (Minister of Defense).

Biography
Born on June 10, 1909 in Ogulin . By nationality Croat. He graduated from carpentry school in the city of Sisak . In his youth he joined the labor movement, in 1933 he was admitted to the membership of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia. After its ban in 1935, he emigrated to the USSR , where he received training at the International Lenin School ( Moscow ) and the Ryazan Military School . In 1937 he went to Spain to fight as part of the international brigades against the Franco. He passed the way from the company commander to the deputy brigade commander. He served to the military rank of captain.
In 1939 he was interned by the French authorities. In the camp he occupied the post of Secretary of the Yugoslav Communist Party organization. He survived the German occupation, in 1941 he was released and a year later he returned home illegally. He arrived at the location of the PLAU headquarters in Gorsky-Kotar, where he was appointed in November 1942 as commander of the 1st (later 4th) Croatian NOAU army corps. He participated in numerous military operations in the territory of Croatia against the German and Croatian invaders, enjoyed great prestige among the partisans. At the end of May 1945, after the end of the war, he was appointed commander of the 2nd JNA Army.
From 1945, he held the highest posts in the People’s Liberation Army of Yugoslavia: Commander of the 2nd Army, Head of the Personnel Department (1946–49), Deputy Minister of Defense (1950–53), War Minister (1953–67). At the same time in 1958-64 was the head of the Central Committee of the PLA. Since 1945 a member of the Central Committee of the CPU, from 1948 - the Politburo of the Central Committee of the CPU (later - similar bodies of the Union of Communists of Yugoslavia).
He was awarded the Order of the People’s Hero of Yugoslavia (decree of November 17, 1953 ), the Hero of Socialist Labor, the People’s Liberation, the Military Flag and many others, including the Soviet Order of Suvorov , 1st (20.06.1956) and 2nd (5.09.1944) degrees [1] .
He died on February 8, 1980 in Belgrade . He was buried there, on the Alley of Honorary Citizens at the New Cemetery.
